Therapeutic ContractCounselling is most effective when client and therapist work together in a collaborative manner. The following ground rules, therefore, represent an ideal therapeutic contract that therapist and client should strive to observe. • The therapist will offer conditions of safety, privacy and confidentiality. • The therapist will offer a fixed weekly time that will remain unchanged unless a new time has been negotiated with the client. • Therapy is offered on an open-ended basis unless otherwise agreed; the therapist will not terminate counselling without the client’s consent. • The client agrees to arrive to the session on time. • The client agrees to speak openly and honestly. • The therapist undertakes to listen without bias or prejudice or preconception. • The therapist agrees to put his knowledge, training and experience to therapeutic benefit. • Therapist and client agree to repair a ground rule whenever one is broken.
